Yvy Ong - My journey exploring 3D scanning/imaging and facial recognition technologies

Project 3

Module 3

In project 3 I will explore 3D scanning/imaging and facial recognition technologies in order to create my own 3D-Printed Selfie.

Activity 1

This is the original code that I was given in class, this guided me when I added my own pictures since I knew the order that I inputted the images would affect how it appeared. I wanted to see what the original code looked like and I was testing how it tracked my face and how the layers were affected by small movements. I tilted my head as far as I could to the right to see how it affected the layers. I tilted my head as far as I could to the left to see how it affected the layers. I tried to see how close I could get until it wouldn't detect my face but even when I was really close my face was still registered. I tried to see how far I could get until it wouldn't detect my face but even when I was fairly far away my face was still registered. I wanted to draw my own simple data portrait so I made a baby-like creature in seperate layers. This is what the baby-like creature drawing looks like on its own. This is the order I inputted the layers in so that it would show up properly when I loaded blazeface. This was what the baby-like creature looked like on blazeface after I loaded the code. I realized I made the face a little bit bigger than originally anticipated but that was okay. This was what the baby-like creature looked like when I tilted my head to the left. This was what the baby-like creature looked like when I looked straigt into the camera. This was what the baby-like creature looked like when I tilted my head to right. This was what the baby-like creature looked like when I got close to the camera. This was what the baby-like creature looked like when I got as close to the camera as I possibly could. I wanted to draw another simple data portrait so I made a calico cat in seperate layers. This is what the calico cat drawing looks like on its own. This is the order I inputted the layers in for the calico cat so that it would show up properly when I loaded blazeface. This was what the calico cat looked like when I tilted my head as far as I could to the right. This was what the calico cat looked like when I looked straigt into the camera and stayed still. This was what the calico cat looked like when I tilted my head to the right. This was what the calico cat looked like when I tilted my head to the left. This was what the calico cat looked like when I attempted to move as far away as possible to see if my face would still register and tilted my head as far as I could to the right. This was what the calico cat looked like when I got as close to the camera as I possibly could. This was what the calico cat looked like when I tilted my head as far as I could to the left.

Activity 2

This is a keychain of a character named 'Hachiware', I wanted to scan this item because it was cute and was not transparent plastic or glass. I did have concerns about the metal star scanning properly but I wanted to try anyways. This is a charger head, I wanted to scan this item because it was a simple shape and the white would register easily during the scan. This is a lip balm container, I wanted to scan this item because it was a more complex shape and I liked the colours this item used. I didn't think I would have any trouble scanning this item. This is a small box of staples, I wanted to scan this item because it was a simple shape, it was not shiny or clear, and I didn't think I would have any trouble scanning this item. This is a gluestick, I wanted to scan this item because it was a simple shape, it was not shiny or clear, and I didn't think I would have any trouble scanning this item. This is a front view of the Hachiware keychain scan that I took. Overall, I think it was a good first scan besides the fact that the object is mixing with the paper underneath it and the hole underneath it. This is a back view of the Hachiware keychain scan that I took. It was able to capture the metal star pretty well considering how shiny it is, however it is mixing with the plush part of the keychain. This is a side view of the Hachiware keychain scan that I took. This was one of the more fun objects I scanned since I was dealing with two different textures and seeing how they interacted with eachother after being scanned. This is a front view of the charger head scan that I took. Overall, I think it this is the objects best angle since the metal prongs did not fully load so this way it doesn't look like the charger is missing anything. This is a side view of the charger head scan that I took. Most of the metal prongs are missing, this confused me because I scanned something metal before this and it came out fine. I'm assuming the issue was that it was not bright enough and the prong were too thin to detect. This is a top view of the charger head scan that I took. While the body of it turned out well I was disappointed that the metal prongs didn't fully show up. This is a front view of the lip balm scan that I took. I was really disappointed for this one because I did multiple different scans in different lighting and this was the best scan. I now know that the problem was most likely the shininess of the object but this was the object I was the most excited to scan. This is a back view of the lip balm scan that I took. It is very warped in the back and the scan had trouble differentiating the lid and the container. This is a top view of the lip balm scan that I took. The top of the lid actually came out looking decent with a minimal amount of warping, too bad the rest of it looked like a crush soda can. This is a front view of the staple box scan that I took. Overall, this was my best scan, it had the least amount of warping and I can even read some of the words on the box. I think this turned out so well because the object was not shiny at all. This is a 3/4 view of the staple box scan that I took. I'm really happy with this scan, it even caught the detail of the papers being slightly lifted and it looks essentially identical to the real object. This is a side view of the staple box scan that I took. This angle shows the object mixing with the paper and some warping but its nothing to be bummed about. This is a front view of the glue stick scan that I took. I was frustrated scanning this object because no matter how many times I scanned it, it still came out warped. I'm assuming it was because the lid and bottom part were shiny but still frustrating. This is a top view of the glue stick scan that I took. At this angle the glue stick definitely doesn't look as bad but there is still a lot of warping on the lid of the object. I chose the Hachiware keychain to put into Meshmixer because it had this giant hole at the bottom. It almost looks like an optical illusion but there's a huge hole underneath that will show the top of the model through the hole. This is the Hachiware keychain scan in Meshmixer preparing for the surgery to fix the hole underneath it. I also cut away as much of the paper background underneath the keychain to create a less overwhelming look. This is what the Hachiware keychain looks like after the surgery, there is no longer a hole just an untextured fill at the bottom. Yay! This is what the obj file of the Hachiware keychain looked like after being uploaded to Cinema 4D. I put the render window over half the keychain to see what it looks like fully rendered compared to how it looks beforehand. This is what the Hachiware keychain looked like after I reduced the amount of polygons the model had. I also wanted to show the fully rendered version beside it for a comparison of what the keychain should look like. This is what the whole keychain looks like rendered and with a lowered amount of polygons.

Reflexive Workshop 1 & 2

This is a collage of multiple faces because collaboration and getting feedbacks from others heavily contributes to being self-aware. Before one can successfully understand others, one must understand themself first. This collage of images shows the importance of knowing and being able to percieve one's self accurately. Each colour shows a different personality type and the words on each box describes the personality traits of each type.

Final Project 3 Design

My final project represents fun, whimsy, and love through my chosen objects, pose, and composition.

My final project, a full body print of myself standing on a slice of cake with whipped cream on my head.
